Dropping Transgender Identity From List of Mental Disorders
In this day and age it's surprising that transgender identity has not yet been removed from the list of mental disorders. Despite general consensus among the World Health Organization to not pathologize transgender people, this NY Times article sheds light on the actual bureaucratic need for a diagnosis to exist for insurance coverage purposes of hormonal therapy and transitional surgery. Now it's about getting the wording right to find the least offensive terminology for the diagnosis, which obviously differs from country to country.
