HBO Documentary: Suited
Unlike other posts where I discuss interesting articles, this time I want to focus on a documentary film I recently saw on HBO. "Suited", produced by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, is about a Brooklyn based company that makes suits for clients of the LGBT community to help them look the way they feel. Tailors Rae and Daniel, aside from making perfectly fitted suits, have the ability to heal through their craft, with each suit holding the potential for empowerment and self-actualization. Being able to see oneself in a suit that is fitted to one's body in the way one has always wanted and felt oneself to be, is a powerful corrective emotional experience. When I wrote healing, I meant it. This is an extremely important film as it portrays many of the struggles facing transgendered individuals and individuals who experience their gender as fluid. I strongly recommend it.
