Paying Close Attention to How We Feel Post Elections

This rainy Wednesday in New York is a somber day for many, as well as an important day of reflection, in which we can pause and take stock of the various feelings we are experiencing and notice how they are affecting us.

Accepting emotions that surface without rejecting them or trying to push them away is not an easy thing to do. The act of sitting with difficult feelings without judgment is an important step in processing, yet is something that even advanced meditators struggle with. Listening and paying attention to our various thoughts and emotions can be hard, however, it provides invaluable information in helping us stay connected to who we are, what we are about, and who we strive to become.

None of this is easy, however, it is important to remember that we don't have to do it alone. Whether through therapy, or through other supportive networks, allowing ourselves to explore our feelings in a nurturing environment, whether they be fear, sadness, confusion, disappointment, shock, grief, or any other emotion that arises, is extremely validating, meaningful and therapeutic.
